Fasting and Weight Gain - Part 2

Updated: May 28, 2020

Gluconeogenesis is the process of synthesizing glucose in the body from non-carbohydrate precursors. Simply put, conversion of protein to sugar as fuel. (So all that excess protein will be converted to glucose. You might even gain weight ...) Your aim: Ketosis. Ketosis is a metabolic state in which fat provides most of the fuel for the body when there is limited access to glucose. With ketosis, you are taking your fat out from deep freeze and using that as fuel instead of glucose. And yes, this is when you properly lose fat. So how to we get to that? To go into ketosis, you need to eat fewer than 50 grams of carbs per day. So DON'T starve. Just cut sugar. So when you cut out sugar: insulin levels go down fatty acids are released from body fat stores transferred to the liver oxidized and turned into ketones (or ketone bodies) for energy. Ketones can cross the blood brain barrier and provide energy for the brain in the absence of glucose. So now you know, sugar/carbs is NOT an essential nutrient. Glucose being the preferred fuel of your body is like you prefer to eat a McD meal instead of a salad bowl with salmon. It's not a healthier fuel, its just more convenient. The previous food pyramid where you were advised to eat the bulk of your food from carbs is plain wrong. Also wrong is eating multiple small meals a day to increase metabolism so you lose weight. The increased metabolism from digestion is miniscule. Being in ketosis combined with intermittent fasting and a ketogenic diet with lots of high fibre, non starchy vegetables, will help you prevent: Heart disease Type 2 diabetes Metabolic syndrome Alzheimers Disease Cancer Parkinsons Disease Next round we will discuss the nutrient dense, plant based diet. Also, as always, if you have specific health issues, on medication, your diet needs to be modified. And there's no one size diet fits all. And if you do cheat days, go ahead. But remember that you don't really need cheat days Let's continue with increased health after this Ramadhan. Insya Allah next Ramadhan will see a new transformed you ** If you like this content, give a thumbs up, and help donate to the Ride of Hope charities.
